How to Get Rid of Pimples in 5 Min
Acne can be stubborn, and it seems to appear suddenly at its worst. The good news is that over-the-counter and prescription drugs can eliminate pimples and help prevent new breakthroughs. The Mayo Clinic points out that the bad news is that some acne products can cause side effects such as redness, discoloration or dryness. (1) For this reason, some people prefer to use natural solutions to treat acne at home.
Joshua Zeichner, MD, director of cosmetic and clinical research at the Dermatology Department of Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, said that generally, the milder the acne, the easier it is to treat at home. But in more severe cases—especially when there are cysts or nodules—professional treatment is usually required.
For mild acne, you may be surprised to find that there are many ways to treat acne in your own home and in the kitchen anywhere.
You can mix common foods and ingredients (such as cucumber, oatmeal, grapes, and yeast) into the mask and then treat acne. Homemade facial treatments may help prevent or remove acne and keep your skin shiny, moisturized and healthy.
Grapes are a refreshing snack, whether eaten directly as a snack, halved as a salad ingredient, or frozen as a healthy dessert. But when you think of acne treatment, you may not think of grapes.
However, according to an article published in Advances in Dermatology and Allergy in April 2016, resveratrol in red grape skins may have bactericidal activity against Dermatobacterium acnes. Formerly known as Propionibacterium acnes, Propionibacterium acnes is a type of bacteria in the sebaceous glands that can cause acne. (2)
So take a few fresh grapes from the refrigerator and you have a simple facial cleanser. Fran E. Cook-Bolden, MD, a dermatologist and dermatologist in New York City, said that two to three grapes are cut in half and the flesh is rubbed on the face and neck. Then rinse with cold water.
If you have ever been to a spa, you may have put cucumber slices on your eyes to reduce puffiness-and they may not be a fake treatment.
A past review indicated that cucumber can have a soothing effect on the skin, reducing irritation, swelling and pain. (3) Therefore, they can potentially relieve inflammation associated with acne.
In the case of acne, “inflammation occurs in the oil glands and hair follicles, resulting in red, angry bumps on the skin,” explains Dr. Zeichner. When acne develops deep in the skin, “cysts may form and fill with oil. If the cyst wall ruptures and the oil is exposed to deeper skin layers, a strong inflammatory response usually occurs,” he said.
How can cucumber help?
“Cucumbers have skin soothing and moisturizing properties, so if your skin becomes inflamed from acne, cucumbers may provide a moderate calming effect,” Zeichner points out. But he warned that they are not effective in treating potential pimples.
The way to get the benefits is as follows: “Mix a cucumber and 1 cup of oatmeal to make a paste,” said Dr. Cook-Boarden. Mix 1 teaspoon of [tsp] this paste with 1 teaspoon of yogurt and apply it to your face. Keep it for 30 minutes, then rinse off.
If you don’t have oatmeal or yogurt in your kitchen, use this cucumber therapy instead. This cool, soothing mask will help smooth skin that feels rough due to acne. “Mash a whole cucumber, strain the water, add 1 tablespoon of sugar, and mix well,” Cook-Boarden said. “Apply on the face and keep for 10 minutes; then wash with cold water.”
Honey has many healing properties. According to the Mayo Clinic, some people use it as a natural cough syrup and relieve sore throats. (4)
According to an article published in August 2016 by the Central Asia Global Health Journal, in vitro studies have shown that the antibacterial properties of honey may also promote the healing of burns and wound infections, and inhibit the growth of Propionibacterium acnes. (5)
Cook-Bolden said that before using this mask, please rinse your face with warm water. Then apply honey to the skin for 30 minutes. Rinse off the honey with warm water.
Although more research is needed, evidence published in the International Journal of Female Dermatology in April 2015 suggests that fermented dairy products such as yogurt may promote skin health. Yogurt is also a probiotic, which has been shown to inhibit Propionibacterium acnes. (6)
When making the mask, mix 1 teaspoon of brewer’s yeast with a small amount of plain yogurt to make a thin mixture. Cook-Bolden said: “Apply it thoroughly to all oily areas and leave it for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water; then use cold water to tighten the pores.”
6. Oatmeal Facial
According to research published in the Journal of Drugs and Dermatology in January 2015, the anti-inflammatory properties of oatmeal have a natural soothing effect, which can relieve irritation caused by skin diseases such as rash, erythema, burns, itching, and eczema. (7)
Zeichner said that oatmeal has skin protection, moisturizing and anti-inflammatory effects. “It is not particularly effective for treating acne, but it can help soothe dry, inflamed skin. I usually recommend oatmeal moisturizers for patients who use treatments for potentially irritating acne,” he further noted.
Mix 2 teaspoons of oatmeal, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, and enough water to make a paste. Apply the paste to your face and rub it gently. Then rinse thoroughly.
7. Turmeric Facial Mask
Cook-Bolden said that in order to get beautiful skin, Indian brides traditionally use a turmeric mask before their wedding. According to a published review, this may be due to the anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antioxidant properties of the fragrance, and its ability to significantly improve the severity of skin diseases such as acne, hair loss, atopic dermatitis, oral lichen planus, itching, and psoriasis . In phytotherapy research in August 2016. (8)
The ingredients for this acne treatment are available at spice markets and ethnic food stores.
Mix 1/2 cup chickpea flour with 2 teaspoons of turmeric powder, sandalwood powder and ghee (clarified butter) or almond oil, then mix them with enough water to make a paste. “Apply and hold for 5 to 10 minutes,” Cook-Bolden said. “Use palms and fingers to rub vigorously to remove all the paste.” Rinse with water.
A Final Word on Home Remedies for Acne
Homemade facial masks can rejuvenate your skin and help clear acne-all these recipes use ingredients commonly found in your pantry and refrigerator. Try one or more of these therapies to treat acne-prone skin and see how your skin reacts.
Zeichner said that if home treatment does not help after 2 to 4 weeks, please contact a dermatologist for help. “Unfortunately, delays in treatment increase the risk of stains on the skin and, in some cases, permanent scars,” he warned.
